High Court case status

Check High Court case status for any of India's 25 High Courts by case number or by party name. Pick your court, fill in what you have, and we clear the CAPTCHA for you.

Where a court sits at more than one bench, each keeps its own register. The bench you choose matters every bit as much as the case number, and picking the wrong one is the usual reason a search comes back empty.

How to search

Two ways in, depending on what you have.

By case number

The usual route. You'll need the case type, the number and the filing year, all three, because the same number goes out under every case type each year. A writ petition and a criminal appeal can both be number 482 of 2024.

By party name

A petitioner or respondent name, plus the year it was filed. The year isn't optional: eCourts returns nothing for a name on its own. Common names come back as long lists, so use the case number when you have it.

A CNR will not work here. The 16-character code is the best reference to quote at the registry, and it is what a district court case search accepts, but the High Court record does not take one as a search key. Use the case number or the party name instead.

What comes back

Enough to know you have the right case.

A High Court search returns the case number and type, the CNR, the filing and registration numbers, and both parties. That is what the registry exposes, and it is enough to confirm the case is yours.

Hearing dates, the current stage and order PDFs are not in that response. Put the case on the tracker and we check it through the day, then tell you when something moves.

Pick a court

Start with your High Court.

When nothing comes back

It's almost always the bench.

Allahabad and Lucknow. Jabalpur, Indore and Gwalior. Chennai and Madurai. Jaipur and Jodhpur. Each keeps a separate register, and a search of one never reaches the other. If you're certain the case exists, try the other seat before you assume anything's broken, then check the case type and the year.

Questions

The things people ask us.

How do I check High Court case status online?

Choose the High Court, then search by case number and year or by party name. A case number search also needs the case type, because the same number is reissued under each type every year.

Can I check a High Court case by CNR number?

Not here. CNR lookup works for district courts, and the High Court registry does not accept one as a search key. Use the case number with its case type and year, or search by party name.

Can I check High Court case status by party name?

Yes, but the filing year is mandatory alongside the name. The eCourts record will not return results for a name on its own. Common names return long lists, so the case number is quicker when you have it.

What does a High Court search show me?

The case number and type, the CNR, the filing and registration numbers, and both parties. That is enough to confirm you have the right case. Hearing dates, stage and order PDFs are not in the High Court response, so track the case and we watch for those.

Which High Court is my case in?

It follows the state where the case was filed, not where you live. A few courts cover more than one state or union territory: Punjab and Haryana sits at Chandigarh and covers both states, and Bombay covers Maharashtra and Goa.

What is the UP High Court?

It is the Allahabad High Court, which people also call the Uttar Pradesh High Court. It sits at Prayagraj with a second bench at Lucknow, and the two keep separate registers.

Why does my case not show up?

Most often the case is filed at a different bench of the same court. Allahabad and Lucknow, Jabalpur and Indore and Gwalior, Chennai and Madurai, Jaipur and Jodhpur all keep separate registers, and a search of one does not reach the other. Try the other bench, then check the case type and the year.

Is this the official High Court website?

No. Nyay is an independent service and is not affiliated with eCourts, any High Court or any government body. We read the same public case records that anyone can, and we keep reading them for you instead of making you check by hand.

What is a CNR number?

The CNR (Case Number Record) is a permanent 16-character code that identifies a case for its whole life across every court in India. Unlike a case number it never changes and is never reused, which makes it the most reliable reference to quote when dealing with the registry.

We read the public eCourts record, so this is only as current as the registry has published. If something turns on a deadline or a limitation period, check with the registry or your advocate. Don't rely on us for that. If it's the law itself you need, the bare acts are here in full.
